Shirley Ann Combs (Walton) was born on March 18, 1949 in Gary, Indiana to the late Benjamin and Elizabeth Walton, Sr., the sixth of 10 children.
Shirley attended school in Gary and graduated from the legendary Froebel High School, class of 1968.
In the late 70’s she, along with the rest of her family, attended New Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where they were introduced to the love of Christ. The family later attended Evening Star Baptist Church. Shirley eventually accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour in her life, leaving things of her past behind.
Shirley went on to attend and earn a certificate in Cosmetology, after which she became united in marriage to Larry Combs of Gary, IN, who preceded her in death.
Shirley later began a romance that would last a lifetime with Lonnie Hawthorne. The two eventually left Gary, IN and relocated to Cleveland, Ohio where Shirley remained until her passing.
She was employed by Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority, she befriended several people who became like her family.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Larry Combs; both parents Benjamin and Elizabeth Walton, Sr.; two sisters, Elizabeth (Crosby) Haney and Angela Walton Scruggs and one brother, Albert Walton, Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memory the love of her life, Lonnie Hawthorne (Cleveland, Ohio); three sisters, Sara Lance (San Antonio, Texas), Louvenia Walton (Gary, Indiana), and Linda (Frank) Walker, Sr. (Shreveport, Indiana); three brothers, Benjamin (Gwendolyn) Walton, Sr. and Tyrone (Danielle) Walton (Gary, Indiana, Larry (Doris) Walton, Sr. (Dowagiac, Michigan); a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, all whom loved her dearly; one niece/daughter that was especially close to her heart, LaTanya (Guan ) Hillsman, Sr. of Gary, Indiana.
